In the spring of 2023, Gwyneth Wright was living life to the fullest. A talented watercolour artist, devoted grandmother, and active member of her North Yorkshire community, she spent her days painting landscapes, singing with the Brompton-on-Swale Ladies Choir, and walking the hills with the Swaledale Outdoor Club.
Alongside her husband, Richard, she had recently helped save their local village pub, transforming it into a hub for locals.
Married since 1976, Gwyneth and Richard shared nearly five decades of adventures together, from hiking all 214 Wainwright fells in the Lake District to travelling to Australia, Sri Lanka, and Cuba.
Retirement for the couple was rich with the same energy and joy that defined their earlier years.
But in May 2023, their world changed when Gwyneth was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. With no prior signs, the diagnosis came as a devastating shock.
Just three months later, in August 2023, Gwyneth passed away at home with Richard by her side.
Her wish to remain at home was made possible thanks to the compassionate support of Herriot Hospice, whose care team provided essential help and comfort during those final, precious weeks.
“They made it possible for Gwyneth to be at home, where she wanted to be,” Richard said.
In the wake of her passing, the family turned their grief into action. Gwyneth’s daughter, Elaine, created a JustGiving fund, raising £1,600 in spring 2024 for Macmillan Cancer Support and Herriot Hospice Homecare.
In June 2025, the family hosted an art exhibition at The Travellers Rest in Skeeby, Richmond, partnering with friend and landlady Nicola, featuring Gwyneth’s paintings. The event raised a further £1,250, again split between the two charities.
Yet for Richard, the journey of giving didn’t end there.
